Why are Led traffic lights replacing traditional traffic lights?

According to the classification of light source, traffic lights can be divided into LED traffic lights and traditional traffic lights. However, with the increasing use of LED traffic lights, many cities began to use LED traffic lights instead of traditional traffic lights. So what’s the difference between led traffic lights and traditional lights?

Differences between LED traffic lights and traditional traffic lights:

1. Service life: LED traffic lights have a long service life, generally up to 10 years. Taking into account the impact of harsh outdoor conditions, life expectancy is expected to drop to 5-6 years without maintenance.

Traditional traffic lights such as incandescent lamp and halogen lamp have short service life. Changing a light bulb is a hassle. It needs to be replaced 3-4 times a year. Maintenance costs are relatively high.

2. Design:

Compared with traditional light sources, LED traffic lights have obvious differences in optical system design, electrical accessories, heat dissipation measures and structural design. As LED traffic lights are a pattern lamp design composed of multiple LED lights, a variety of patterns can be formed by adjusting the layout of LED. And it can combine all kinds of colors as one and all kinds of signal lights as one, so that the same light body space can provide more traffic information and configure more traffic schemes. It can also form dynamic mode signals by switching mode LED of different parts, so that the rigid traffic signal light becomes more humanized and vivid.

The traditional traffic signal lamp is mainly composed of light source, lamp holder, reflector and transparent cover. In some respects, there are still some shortcomings. Led layouts like led traffic lights cannot be adjusted to form patterns. These are difficult to achieve traditional light sources.

3. No false display:

Led traffic signal light emission spectrum is narrow, monochromatic, no filter, the light source can be used basically. Because it’s not like an incandescent lamp, you have to add reflective bowls to make all the light forward. Moreover, it emits color light and does not require color lens filtering, which solves the problem of false display effect and chromatic aberration of lens. Not only is it three to four times brighter than incandescent traffic lights, it also has greater visibility.

Traditional traffic lights need to use filters to obtain the desired color, so the utilization of light is greatly reduced, so the overall signal strength of the final signal light is not high. However, traditional traffic lights use color chips and reflective cups as an optical system to reflect interference light from the outside (such as sunlight or light), which will cause people to have the illusion that the non-working traffic lights are in working state, namely “false display”, which may lead to accidents.
