Lightning protection measures for LED traffic lights

In summer, thunderstorms are particularly frequent,lightning strikes are electrostatic discharges that typically send millions of volts from a cloud to the ground or another cloud. As it travels, lightning creates an electromagnetic field in the air that creates thousands of volts (known as surges) on power lines and an induced current hundreds of miles away. These indirect attacks usually occur outside on exposed power lines, such as street lamps. Equipment such as traffic lights and base stations are sending waves. The surge protection module directly faces the surge interference from the power line at the front end of the circuit. It transmits or absorbs surge energy to minimize the threat of surges to other operating circuits, such as AC/DC power units in LED lighting equipment.

For LED streetlights, lightning creates an induced surge on the power cord. This surge of energy creates a shockwave on the wire, which is to say, a shockwave. The surge is transmitted by this induction. The world out there is proliferating. The wave will produce a tip on the sine wave along the 220 v transmission line. When the tip enters the street lamp, it will damage the LED street lamp circuit.

Therefore, the lightning protection of LED street lamps will benefit their service life, which is currently required.

So this requires us to do a good job of LED traffic lights lightning protection, otherwise it will affect its normal use, resulting in traffic chaos. So how to do the lightning protection of LED traffic lights?

1.Install the current limiting lightning rod on the pillar of the LED traffic signal lamp

Reliable electrical and mechanical connections must be made between the top of the support and the base of the current limiting lightning rod. Then, the support can be grounded or connected to the ground network of the support itself by flat steel. The grounding resistance must be less than 4 ohms.

2. Overvoltage protector is used as power supply protection at the lead of LED traffic signal lamp and signal control mechanical and electrical source

We should pay attention to waterproof, moisture-proof, dustproof and the copper wire of the overvoltage protector is connected with the door frame grounding key respectively, and the grounding resistance is less than the specified resistance value.

3. Ground protection

For a standard intersection, its pillar and front-end equipment distribution is relatively scattered, so we want to achieve a single point of grounding will be difficult. So in order to ensure that LED traffic lights work grounding and personal protection grounding, only in each pillar below the use of vertical grounding body welded into a network structure, that is, multi-point grounding mode for the incoming wave gradually release and other lightning protection requirements.
