An LED traffic lamp phase essentially specifies the time allowed for traffic flow in different directions.
Phase settings primarily include the signal cycle, red light duration, and green light duration, with the last 2-3 seconds of the green light being amber.
A standard intersection has twelve vehicle movement modes: straight ahead (east-west, west-east, south-north, north-south), small turns (east-north, west-south, north-west, south-east), and large turns (east-south, west-north, north-east, south-west). These twelve traffic movements can be divided into four groups:
1) East-West Straight: East-West, West-East, East-North, West-South
2) North-South Straight: South-North, North-South, South-East, North-West
3) East-South-West-North: East-South, West-North
4) North-South-East-West: North-East, South-West
The four traffic light groups require different signal control, meaning four different phases. Each LED traffic lamp phase is independent and does not interfere with the other. Phase setting information primarily includes the signal cycle, red light duration, and green light duration. The last 2-3 seconds of the green light period are yellow. The cycle of each LED traffic lamp phase is equal and needs to be set separately. Furthermore, to allow the previous phase to clear vehicles, the green light of the next phase must wait two seconds after the previous phase turns red.
The LED traffic lamp phase setting for an intersection needs to be considered based on the specific circumstances of each intersection. Generally speaking, fewer phases will reduce overall traffic delays. However, when traffic flows in all directions at an intersection are heavy, excessive traffic flow conflicts within the same phase can lead to excessive traffic flow conflicts. Therefore, more phases are necessary to properly allocate right-of-way green lights to all directions, reduce conflicts within the phase timeframe, and improve traffic safety and efficiency. Phase configuration methods are as follows:
1. Simple 2-Phase
This configuration can be used at an intersection with no primary or secondary distinction, low traffic flow, and few left-turning vehicles.
2. Simple 3-Phase
When a main road has a dedicated left-turn lane and a branch road has less traffic, a separate left-turn LED traffic lamp phase can be added to the main road. Such intersections can generally be controlled using a simple 3-phase configuration.
3. Simple 4-Phase
When traffic flows on both the main and branch roads are heavy, and both roads have separate left-turn lanes, a simple 4-phase configuration can be used for signal control at the intersection.
4. 3-Phase with a separate pedestrian phase.
5. Complex 8-Phase (green light optimization phase under sensor detection conditions).
