Do security camera poles need lightning protection?

Lightning is extremely destructive, with voltages reaching millions of volts and instantaneous currents reaching hundreds of thousands of amperes. The destructive consequences of lightning strikes manifest in three levels:

1. Equipment damage and personal injury;

2. Reduced lifespan of equipment or components;

3. Interference or loss of transmitted or stored signals and data (analog or digital), even causing electronic equipment to malfunction, resulting in temporary paralysis or system shutdown.

The likelihood of a monitoring point being directly damaged by lightning is very small. With the continuous development of modern electronic technology and the widespread use and networking of numerous sophisticated electronic devices, the main culprits damaging a large number of electronic devices are induced lightning overvoltage, operational overvoltage, and lightning surge intrusion overvoltage. Every year, there are numerous cases of various communication control systems or networks being damaged by lightning, including security monitoring systems where equipment damage and automated monitoring failures due to lightning strikes are common occurrences. Front-end cameras are designed for outdoor installation; in areas prone to thunderstorms, lightning protection systems must be designed and installed.

Residential security camera poles are usually 3–4 meters high with a 0.8-meter arm, whereas urban road security camera poles are usually 6 meters high with a 1-meter horizontal arm.

Take into account the following three factors when buying security camera poles:

First, an excellent main pole. The main poles of good security camera poles are made of premium seamless steel pipes. Increased pressure resistance results from this. Therefore, when purchasing a security camera pole, make sure to always check the main pole’s material.

Second, pipe walls that are thicker. Thicker pipe walls, which offer superior wind and pressure resistance, are typically found in high-quality security camera poles. Therefore, when buying a security camera pole, make sure to check the thickness of the pipe wall.

Thirdly, simple installation. Installing high-quality security camera poles is typically simple. Better user experience and increased competitiveness are two benefits of simpler operation compared to standard security camera poles.

Lastly, based on the kind of security cameras to be installed, select an appropriate security camera pole.

Selecting the appropriate pole to prevent blocking the camera: To get the best monitoring effect, the height of poles for public security monitoring should be determined by the type of camera; a height of 3.5 to 5.5 meters is usually acceptable.

(1) Bullet camera pole height selection: Select relatively low poles, usually between 3.5 and 4.5 meters.

(2) Choosing a pole height for dome cameras: Dome cameras have an adjustable focal length and can rotate 360 degrees. As a result, all dome cameras should have poles that are as high as possible, usually between 4.5 and 5.5 meters. For each of these heights, the horizontal arm length should be chosen based on the distance between the pole and the monitored target, as well as the framing direction, to avoid the horizontal arm being too short to capture suitable monitoring content. A 1-meter or 2-meter horizontal arm is advised to reduce obstruction in areas with obstructions.
